AQUAFITNESS: EXERCISE FOR LIFE

There is no better way to keep the whole body humming than through aquafit. While I believe that the path to wellness begins when we stop looking for a cure and look for a purpose, I know that living our purpose begins with a fit body.

You don’t have to take an expensive cruise to enjoy the benefits of water.

What is Aquafit?

Aquafit is a low impact exercise that is designed to improve both flexibility and strength. It works on both upper and lower body – joints, muscles and bones, providing a whole body workout. Never mind that you can’t swim or are self-conscious standing au natural with a bunch of strangers in the change room. Aquafit is for everyone.

When I joined aquafit, there were two ninety-something women who came to class almost every day. No matter the sagging bum of the bathing suit, they came for the physical relief, the social interaction and the sheer joy of feeling the silky caress of water on a tired body. What an inspiration! Don’t wait until you seize up like an old engine before you make a commitment to regular aquafit. It is one of the best investments you will ever make.

Benefits of Aquafit

I began aquafit classes thirty years ago. Over the years I would foolishly tell myself I was too busy and go for long periods without doing my aquafit. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with polymyelgia rheumatica that I made a serious commitment to this exercise program. At that time, research into the effects of water activity on arthritis and other forms of skeletal-muscular disease was just beginning. Today we have robust confirmation of the all-round gift to our bodies this exercise provides.

  • Builds cardiovascular stamina
  • Improves circulation
  • Rehabilitates muscles
  • Strengthen and tones muscles
  • Improves breathing
  • Relieves stress
  • Lessens pain from osteoarthritis and other chronic conditions
  • Burns fat

Taking Action

  • Municipal pools and health clubs with pools are available in most communities. Check them out and find one that suits your needs and your budget.
  • Start slowly but be consistent –  three to four times a week.
  • Aquafit is very forgiving and is easily adapted to your own needs.
